Goku and Kamehameha are two words that go hand in hand in the Dragon Ball universe. The Kamehameha wave is one of the most iconic attacks in anime history, instantly recognizable by fans worldwide. But did you know that this legendary move almost had a completely different name? Surprisingly, the famous attack’s name was not originally Toriyama’s idea, it was suggested by his wife!
When Akira Toriyama was developing Dragon Ball, he had already decided that Goku needed a signature energy attack. However, he struggled to come up with the perfect name for it. He wanted something catchy, powerful, and fitting for Goku’s personality. But after brainstorming multiple ideas, nothing seemed right. That’s when his wife stepped in and made a suggestion that would change Dragon Ball forever.
How The Name Kamehameha Was Chosen For Goku's Legendary Attack

Toriyama’s wife, Nachi Mikami, played a huge role in naming the move. When she saw her husband struggling to come up with a name, she jokingly suggested Kamehameha. The name was inspired by King Kamehameha I, the ruler who united the Hawaiian Islands. She thought it sounded unique, and it had a strong, regal feel to it. Toriyama loved the suggestion and decided to use it immediately.
What made the name even more fitting was its connection to Master Roshi, the creator of the technique and Goku's legendary teacher. Master Roshi’s title in Japanese is ‘Kame Sennin,’ meaning ‘Turtle Hermit.’ Since ‘Kame’ means ‘turtle’ in Japanese, the name ‘Kamehameha’ was a perfect match. It not only sounded powerful but also fit within the themes of Dragon Ball’s early story.
What If It Had A Different Name?

It’s hard to imagine Goku’s famous energy wave being called anything other than Kamehameha, but it could have turned out very differently. If Toriyama had stuck with another name, the attack might not have had the same impact on fans. A different name could have changed how the move was received, possibly making it less memorable.
Some fans speculate that Toriyama might have named the move something simpler, like ‘Energy Wave’ or ‘Dragon Blast.’ While these could have worked, they wouldn’t have had the same charm. The uniqueness of ‘Kamehameha’ made it stand out, and it became a defining part of Dragon Ball’s identity.
